Constance Farquaharson -Artist

I have met this wonderful lady a few times and have taken her picture on several occasions with her paintings, but recently have been asked to document her paintings for her. At the end of documenting her pictures on this most recent occasion, I asked if she would pose for me in a chair in her rented 1 room terraced studio, in a very chic part of Sydney. I loved the paint spotted tunic which veiled her attire. This is my favourite picture from the several images that I took of her.

I have been very fortunate to have become acquainted with many artists and creative people who see subtle nuances in everything they see, and then possess the ability to capture and communicate that through to us all through their respective mediums.

I am grateful for getting to know this quiet and gracious woman, whose courtesy and wonder of life is an inspiration. A brief bio and list of Constance's accomplishments are included here, together with a couple of her works. ENJOY

PLEASE NOTE, That all the images of paintings were photographed by me, but are images of original paintings which copyright is owned by Constance, and I would ask that they NOT be copied or utilised in any way without appropriate written permission.

Constance Farquharson first began art studies in 1950′s intending to pursue a career in art. At this time she was particularly influenced by Henry Gibbons, teacher of William Dobel and Joshua Smith, among others. Midst the demands of two marriages, seven children, and a successful career as an interior designer, Constance resumed art studies in the late 1960′s.

Joshua Smith himself was to be an influence in the development of her portrait and still life tonal impressionist technique, which was further developed in Florence, Italy at the renowned Cecil Granes Studio.

Since 1990 she has worked full-time as an artist from her studio in Paddington, Sydney. She gains particular delight in the portrayal of children.

Constance has several times been selected as a finalist in the Portia Geach Memorial Portrait Award and in the Mosman Art Award. She has exhibited at the Barry Stern Gallery, Sydney; Driden Fine Art, Adelaide; Custom Fine Art in Los Angeles USA and at the BC Fine Art in Sanctuary Cove, Qld.

Constance Farquharson paints from life, so the sitter is required to attend a series of portrait sittings, which is part of the curious pleasure of the portrait commission. She divides her time between her studio in Sydney and overseas locations. “Her approach to the portrait genre is intimate and gentle, and her work reflects both humour and insight.” (Judges’ comments, Mosman Art Society, 2004)

No exhibitions recently?

I am quite impressed with her great number of recognitions...she's an accomplished artist and deserves all of them. I would have loved to see some of her artwork here with children where that's her current area of interest.

Thanks for sharing this with us.

Hi Tammy,

Yes she has been in many exhibitions recently, though I think only as a contributor, not the whole exhibition. I will check though.

Yes, she asked me to photograph only a number of commissions and still life regrettably.
