Am I ever gonna see your face again?

On Saturday evening I journeyed northward from Sydney to Newcastle to cover the big finale reunion concert for Australian Rock band The Angels. What a momentous event. Having seen them at South’s Juniors club a little over a month ago, til now, what a transformation the band has made. They were tighter, and the vibe was heightened.

The concert in Newcastle was big. By any reasonable standard the demographic was mid thirties upwards, though I noticed a lot of 20+ year olds as well, but it was packed. Really packed, and there were smells other than tobacco I noticed but overall the crowd was happy and the night was incident free.

It was easy to be swept up in the vibe of the songs and the beat of the music. I positioned myself at the front centre of the stage and was therefore enough away from the speakers not to have it worry me like last time. Because I was there in an official capacity I also was able to go backstage and onstage and got a number of shots I am extremely proud of. I captured moments that lasted just seconds, yet harnessed the zeitgeist or mood and feeling of the night. I was able to take Marc, a good friend along as well. He is also an electric bass player and was particularly pleased to meet the electric bass player Chris Bailey from the band and I took his picture with Chris.

Before the concert I created a collage with some of the images I took at South’s Juniors previously and was extremely pleased with the result. I produced only 12 and then had them all personally signed. See below.

IF you want one of these extremely limited edition photographic collages created by me and personally autographed by the band members I have three only to sell at $100 each + postage. Which is considerably less than the $295 price of their limited framed edition of 200 pieces.

Mine are limited to 12 only, three went to the band which was an honour that they wanted a copy, three to Marc Pavy as a momento for him, his father-in-law and mate in Perth, two to some people in the bands entourage who really wanted a copy and I have 4 left.

One will be kept and framed by me, and three others are available only.

If there are any fans who want one, just post a comment in the comments section that says you want one and include your email address and phone number so I can contact you and arrange it all. Your personal details will not appear on the blog or be published in anyway I promise you. Oh, and the picture you see below is scanned to show the autographs and looks a little less than it actually does so I have included a copy of what it really looks like. If people want a copy of this picture without the autographs it will be $20 + postage. Rick Brewster commented that he loved it and the shot on the right of the three of them looks fantastic, it lasted for less then 30 seconds where all of the faces were in line and visible.

I got home at 4am on Sunday morning, I had to drop off a picture that someone needed by 9am Sunday morning, which I left under their doormat, I came home transferred the images to the computer, fixed up some other images I had to give to a family where their daughter Carolina is leaving for the US on Tuesday and needed those, and then went to sleep…whew. Then it was up for another busy day on Sunday. Have I stated before I LOVE what I do? hehehehe

These last few shots were taken by Marc Pavy of me with Chris Bailey, Rick Brewster and John Brewster. It was pretty hectic backstage after the concert and as such never got the chance to have a shot with Doc Neeson and Buzz Bidstrup but I chatted briefly with them and they are great guys, in fact they all are. What amazes me the most is that they can still pull a sold out crowd to every gig and not disappoint, some 25 years after they started. That is amazing stuff and would only be rivaled by the Eagles of the US. OK it's on a hugely different scale, but yet these guys are amazing. I noted with some degree of humor a woman backstage who said I am so ticked that they don't remember my name, and another person out the back said that's because they're old! Well, that may be the case, as if I am far behind, but boy can they still deliver where it counts for a band. YOU GUYS ROCK!! still! Thanks for the new memories as well.

Marc even took a picture of me on stage photographing the band as well which I thought was different and kinda nice as a personal momento to show I was there! Don't strain too much to look for me in the background.

The band even used my pictures from the South’s juniors night on their official website. See the link below.

(The title of this post for those who don't know is a song from the Angels. I am not sure how or when but somewhere along the way the crowds added some words of their own in after Doc Neeson sings that line, and for those that don't know them, I shall refrain from adding the words here as it contains a high degree of profanity, lest I offend the regulars to the blog, but the words can be found on the front of a T-shirt on their website if your curiosity gets the better of you.)

Your concern about being too close to the speakers is valid. Years ago I went to a 'heavy metal' concert with a friend who had a personal reason for being there. (Otherwise, I would not have gone.) We were as far away from the stage as it was possible to get, but I knew immediately that my eardrums were in trouble. I couldn't stay more than just a few minutes. I'm already completely deaf in the right ear (Meniere's disease), and couldn't take a chance on losing my hearing on the left side, as well. As it was, just staying there for those few minutes caused a ringing in my left ear that took two DAYS to go away. Scared me!

By the way, I LOVE that shot of you "pondering, at the beach".

Wow, last concert took me 24 hours. One thing we take for granted occasionally is, that when your hearing has gone, it does not return.
