Under the Southern Skies

I watched the opening ceremony to the Beijing Olympics last night and what a wonderful opening. I thought the Australian commentary team was lame at best. Individually, very creative people and talented, but long periods of silence meant that we missed the significance of what was happening. I would love to have seen or at least heard an Australian Chinese person "walk" us through the intricacies of what was occurring. I felt the viewers missed much of the interpretive meanings of what was happening, but there is no denying that China knows how to put on a show. I am not going to mention anything about their system of rule, or politics, there are more people better informed on that than me. But the show, the history and the compliance of all involved was staggering.

I just wanted to add a clip here which is one of my absolute favourites from the Sydney Olympics opening ceremony not 10 mins away from where I live and in a very exciting time at the year 2000. This was by then a young girl called Nikki Webster, I love the words, the harmony and the delivery. Calll me an idealist but if the world could imbue the tenets the song aspires to we would be living in a very different world.

What a shame that the Australian commentators did not assist their viewers in re the background of what all was going on. Bob Costas did the bulk of the work for NBC here in America, and -- as per usual -- he did an excellent job. I did a post after watching just a short while ago. Thought I should do one while I was still feeling the 'glow'. Am STILL feeling a glow! I was thoroughly entranced the whole time. Thought the evening was magical.
