Work! Be flexible, Be talented and do it for NOTHING!
I am sent daily emails about photo positions that come up and I saw this one yesterday and whilst I am in another state and it is not relevant to me anyway, I was still surprised AND disappointed at the way people are actively looking for photographers now.
This isnt the first time I have seen things of this nature, but it certainly is the most blatant talent grab I have ever seen.
The advertisement is essentially asking for a knowledgable person concerning tennis, computing capabilities and photography, with their own equipment, to be available on demand on a voluntary basis! No Pay! There is also no mention of who owns the pictures, though I suspect it is safe to conclude that it wont be the photographer and would be happy to find out I am wrong on this matter.
What makes this sad is, that many, many people in society think that photography is neither a skill that like all others is mastered and of great worth, and they dont care.
There are many who think that photographers are a "dime a dozen" and are in many instances willing to take on work and do it for nothing. Sadly that is true, but what I find disturbing about this advertisement is that people who advertise this way actually manipulate and demean the role of photographers and the people who are passionate and have these great talents.
I sure have done my share of Pro bono work, and still do but it is always on my terms not someone elses.
Just imagine if the wording of this ad below was for a plumber, a car mechanic, a lawyer or doctor?
It would be denounced and hung out to dry where this ad should be. But can you imagine how it would look? I have put my hypothetical version underneath.
You get the picture!
My comment on this advertisement is not to condemn or ridicule the advertiser specifically but to highlight the way people are viewing the role of photographers and the hardwork that goes into becoming one.
