In Memory......

This post today is in memory of the three men, two garbagemen and one police officer simply doing their job, who lost their lives on this day in 1978, victims of the only politically motivated bombing in this country's history.

It occurred when a bomb was placed in a garbage bin outside the Sydney Hilton on 13 February 1978.

The bomb exploded at 12:40 a.m. killing Alec Carter and William Favell who were simply emptying the garbage.

Together with Police officer Paul Birmistriw, who was guarding the entrance to the hotel lounge who died died later from the injuries he sustained. The blast also injured eleven others.

At the time the hotel was the site of the first Commonwealth Heads of Government Regional Meeting (CHOGRM), a regional off-shoot of the biennial meetings of the heads of government from across the Commonwealth of Nations.

The perpetrators have never been found.
