Freedom Wheels in Westmead!

When we had Denzel measured up and fitted for a bike before the close of the School year last year, we took the opportunity to have Marcelina fitted for a bike also.

That must have caused a small stir in the company that creates the bike, Freedom Wheel, because we had a reporter from Technical aid to the disabled come over on the weekend with the intention of taking a picture or two, and writing a a small article in the disability news magazine about our experience and to promote the benefits of physical exercise for people with special needs.

Apparently, in the 15 years of operation no parent has ever ordered a bike at the same time, and Marcelina through a series of occurrences had never ridden a bike and was afraid to fall over, and so she now has a bike with trainers as well.

The reporter, nice as she was had a small Panasonic camera, and whilst i am not critical of that, I wanted to take some really good pics, and it was one of those rare moments where Denzel was so very co-operative! So here are two of those shots.

The people who create these bikes do so on a voluntary basis. They dont charge for their labour, but do charge for the actual cost of the bike and modifications, and whilst it is more expensive than buying a bike off the rack, I could not be happier with the result, or with their care or even with their actual service.

They modify bikes to suit and also do the same for bunk beds and other day to day items to make life easier for people who find some tasks very difficult. It is heavily funded by a donation from Amway. And so I express my gratitude for the great volunteers, their skill, commitment and also to Amway for what they have done to help many people just like Denzel...and Marcelina for that matter!
