Everything To Live For - Turia Pitt
Ever since I first learned of Turia Pitt, an athlete competing in a Marathon in Western Australia's remote Kimberley region who was caught in a fire which ravaged her body with burns, I have been in awe of both the human spirit and of Turia in particular.
Despite her denials on 60 mins that she is an inspiring person, I affirm that is exactly what she is. A person who in 3 years has not just overcome, but flourished. Not content to bemoan her existence but has proactively become an ambassador not just for interplast - a charity that provides free reconstructive surgery to people in developing countries, but an ambassador for Australia.
There is so much we have to fear and be concerned of in the world but I love this woman's spirit, her zest for life and her selflessness. I am not in a position to do so, but I believe we need more of these type of heroes, who inspite of all the odds, triumph.
60 minutes have featured a couple of stories on Turia and I applaud their stories and the way they have brought this person to the awareness of the public.
I have not met Turia but hope one day I get that opportunity. Turia has put all of my life's difficulties into a very clear perspective, thank you for your courage, determination and humanity Turia.
Turia Pitt has a double degree with honours in Mining Engineering and Science. She worked as a model before landing her dream job with Rio Tinto at their prestigious Argyle Diamond Mine and moving to Kununurra with her partner, Michael.Their lives were turned upside-down when she was trapped by a grassfire in a 100 kilometre ultra-marathon in September 2011, and suffered burns to 65 per cent of her body.
